This section gives an annotated photographic overview of the people and places that Shih-Ming encountered during her research journeys to mainland China. Some of the photos also have links to short videos of the dances described.
In 1998 I enlisted Lynn’s aid in writing grant applications for funds to cover my research travel to China at the end of the millennium. My goal was to bring together a dynamic collection of authentic Chinese dance materials for teachers, students, dancers and audiences— the work you see now, almost two decades later. Thanks to remarkable advances in technology over the years, my original notion of a CD-ROM morphed into a multimedia resource—something completely unimagined when the project started! And so, with that first grant, Lynn and I began Chinese our dance project, little knowing the long and rich journey that lay ahead. To complement our book and database, Lynn and I thought you would enjoy snapshots from my travels and the wonderful people I encountered along the way.
